My friend that works at Microsoft showed me an awesome new software. Basically what the program does is compare many, many pictures of the same physical environment (from may different angles) and then compares data points and aligns the photos on the planes from which they were taken and highlights data points that are common to many different photos. The result is an array of points in space that replicate the physical environment where the pictures were taken. The software allows you to navigate the virtual space and view the photos independently.
On a legal note, I personally think that the software has interesting potential uses for crime scene investigation, the cops could create a digital virtual environment of the crime scene which they could navigate as much later in the investigation (and from anywhere) as they wanted. In a similar vein, I think that Microsoft would be smart to do a product placement on a show such as CSI if they have any intention of marketing the software aggressively. Finally, I think that we will see very interesting photo projects coming out of the art community when the software becomes available.
